Residents are demanding to have creationism taught in Centreville’s schools.

About 500 people have signed a petition to include the topic in the science curriculum at Centreville High School.

Creationism is the religious belief that the universe began with Adam and Eve.

Member of Creation Science Ministry of Centreville, Sandra Williams said: “We’re keeping God out of our schools. Evolution is theory, not a fact. All were asking is that students get both sides of the story.”

Science teacher, Bob Stanford said: “This is the 21st century;out students have to be able to compete in the sciences with students from all over the world. How are they going to do that if we teach this nonsense in our science classes?”

School board member Linda Fisher who disagrees with the idea questioned whether the change would need approval by the Department of Education.

Last year schools were under threat of having their Government fundings cut if they continued teaching creationism.
